I am a Biochemistry graduate who has been teaching for 20 years and tutoring for the last 5. I have also been an examiner during that time. My tutoring approach is in two parts: Firstly, I like to help students understand any problem topics so that they are more comfortable in dealing with the novel scenarios that exam questions will throw at them. I try to do this an an engaging manner and encourage student involvement as much as possible so that they are part of the learning process. Secondly, we then put this into practise through past paper questions. This gives me the chance to check a student's understanding whilst at the same time look for areas where exam technique can be improved. I'm a firm believer that past paper questions should be seen as opportunities to improve understanding (rather than simply checking knowledge) and I give clear strategies and guidance on how to achieve that.
